The Uncharted, a new compact electric SUV from Japanese carmaker Subaru, has been tested by the Latvian automotive portal iAuto.lv. It is the smallest electric SUV in the brand's range and is Subaru's version of the Toyota C-HR+, with which it shares a platform, body, battery, drivetrain and most of the interior. Prices start at 36,900 euros.

Toyota basis, distinct character

Cooperation between Toyota and Subaru is not new: it produced the sporty GR86 and BRZ models, and the Subaru Solterra is essentially the Toyota bZ4X. On the Uncharted, the differences are a different front and rear design and higher ground clearance of 211 mm. It is also the first Subaru SUV offered with front-wheel drive.

Versions and prices

There are four versions:

  • Adventure – 57.7 kWh battery, 167 hp, front-wheel drive, 451 km range (WLTP), from 36,900 euros.
  • Limited – 77 kWh battery, 224 hp, front-wheel drive, 592 km, from 43,900 euros.
  • Touring – 77 kWh battery, two motors with 343 hp combined, all-wheel drive, 495 km, from 46,900 euros.
  • Touring+ – the same technology as Touring, plus a panoramic glass roof and two-tone paintwork, from 47,900 euros.

All versions have a maximum charging power of 22 kW on AC and 150 kW on DC; charging from 10 to 80 percent takes under half an hour.

Interior and driving

The cabin has a 14-inch touchscreen, and the steering wheel carries 20 buttons. Boot space ranges from 403 to 1,323 litres. Taller passengers in the rear may lack headroom. The 167 hp version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds, the all-wheel-drive version in about five. With the 224 hp version, average consumption in the test stayed below 14 kWh per 100 km, mostly in city driving. On the motorway, real-world range is expected to be around 400–420 km. There is no one-pedal driving mode.

Verdict of the test

IAuto.lv lists the pluses as rich equipment even in the base version, good off-road ability compared with rivals and a good starting price. The minuses are a smaller boot and limited rear headroom.
