Ostapenko and Hsieh reach doubles quarterfinals at WTA 1000 Beijing
Latvian tennis player Jeļena Ostapenko, partnering Taiwan's Su-wei Hsieh, has reached the doubles quarterfinals at the Beijing WTA 1000 event. The pair beat two Russian players in the round of 16.

Latvian tennis player Aļona Ostapenko and her Taiwanese partner Su-wei Hsieh secured a place in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament at the Beijing WTA 1000 event on Wednesday.
Seeded third, the duo beat Russians Irina Khromacheva and Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2 in the second round, which is the round of 16. In their opening match, the Latvian-Taiwanese pair defeated home wild-card entrants Xinyu Jiang and Xiyu Wang 6-1, 1-6, 10-4. Ostapenko earned 215 WTA doubles ranking points for reaching the quarterfinals.
Next opponents
In the fight for a semifinal spot, Ostapenko and Hsieh will face New Zealand's Erin Routliffe and Indonesia's Aldila Sutjiadi. They beat the seventh-seeded Kazakhstani-American pairing of Anna Danilina and Desirae Krawczyk 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.
Singles results
Ostapenko also played singles in Beijing and reached the third round. Seeded 24th and ranked 32nd on the WTA tour, she had a bye in the first round. In the second round she edged Spain's Paula Badosa (WTA 59th), a former world number two, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5. In the third round, with a place in the last 16 at stake, Ostapenko lost 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 to Belgium's Elise Mertens (WTA 19th). She earned 65 ranking points for her singles run.
The tournament in Beijing is played on hard courts and ends on Sunday.
