Ukraine to buy ATACMS missiles and M270 launchers from Turkey
Ukraine plans to purchase 70 American ATACMS missiles and 12 M270 launchers from Turkey, as Russian drone strikes continue across several regions and Russia again bombed the city of Sumy.
The US State Department has notified Congress that it is prepared to approve the transfer of 70 ATACMS ballistic missiles, 12 M270 launch systems and cluster munitions from Turkey to Ukraine. The deal is valued at roughly 28 million dollars. The department said the transfer aligns with US security assistance goals, while allowing Turkey to reduce its stockpile of aging weapons.
On August 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the country would receive monthly shipments of missiles for American Patriot air defense systems from the US, though he noted that even these supplies would not be enough to fully protect against ballistic attacks. Earlier, on August 1, Zelensky had said Ukraine had run out of air defense missiles capable of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.
Drone strikes across Russia and attack on Sumy
On Monday, drones struck Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan region, home to an oil refinery; monitoring channels reported a possible fire at the facility. Russian authorities have not officially commented on the situation.
Overnight and into the morning, drones were shot down over several Russian regions, including Rostov, Moscow, Kaluga and occupied Sevastopol. Russia's Defense Ministry reported that air defenses destroyed or intercepted a total of 456 Ukrainian drones over more than ten regions, including Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod and Krasnodar, as well as annexed Crimea.
Meanwhile, Russia struck the Ukrainian city of Sumy overnight with guided aerial bombs again. The head of the Sumy regional administration reported five strikes on civilian infrastructure, with at least five people injured and no fatalities reported so far.
Russian losses
According to Ukraine's General Staff, since February 24, 2022, Russian forces have lost approximately 1.459 million personnel, more than 12,250 tanks and nearly 453,000 tactical-level drones. Ukraine does not regularly publish data on its own losses.
