AI-guided robotic turrets already shooting down jet-powered drones in Ukraine

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said AI-controlled robotic turrets have already shot down jet-propelled drones, including "Geran-5" models. The systems' range is limited because they are armed with machine guns.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat has announced that robotic turrets controlled by artificial intelligence, deployed within the country, have already recorded successful hits against jet-propelled drones.

According to Ihnat, these systems have managed to shoot down "Geran-5" type drones as well, which belong to the category of jet-propelled unmanned aircraft and fly considerably faster than conventional propeller-driven drones, making them harder to intercept using traditional means.

Limited operating range

Ihnat noted that the operating range of the robotic turrets is relatively small, since they are equipped with a machine-gun type weapon. The limited firing distance of the machine gun therefore also determines the effective coverage area of the entire system against an approaching target.

Robotic air defense systems are regarded as one of the solutions in countering the growing number of drones and jet-propelled unmanned aircraft used in attacks. AI-guided turrets can operate with less human involvement, reacting faster to an approaching target than traditional, manually operated systems.

Ihnat's statement indicates that this type of technology is already being used in practice for air defense in Ukraine, rather than remaining only at the development or testing stage.
