Trump urged Zelensky to travel to Moscow, Bloomberg reports

According to sources cited by Bloomberg, US President Donald Trump suggested to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that he consider traveling to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The suggestion was reportedly made during a meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Sources told Bloomberg that Zelensky rejected the idea. People close to the Ukrainian president said he was displeased that the White House leader had urged him specifically to travel to the Russian capital.

Kyiv denies the proposal

Zelensky's office disputes this account. Financial Times correspondent Christopher Miller, citing his own sources, reports that Trump and Zelensky discussed the possibility of trilateral talks, but that Trump did not propose that Zelensky travel to Moscow to meet Putin.

Kremlin insists on Moscow

Russia has repeatedly stated that any meeting between Putin and Zelensky could only take place in Moscow. On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated this position, saying that Zelensky is welcome to come to Moscow if he wishes, and that he would be provided with the necessary security guarantees.

It remains unclear whether or when any form of meeting — a bilateral Putin-Zelensky talk or a trilateral meeting including Trump — might take place.
