Electric Volkswagen ID. Polo Tested as First Car Arrives in Latvia

The Latvian television motoring programme TV Autoziņas has test-driven the electric Volkswagen ID. Polo, the German carmaker's new small electric car. The first example in Latvia arrived in top or near-top trim. It matters because the ID. Polo is the original model of the platform that also underpins the previously tested Cupra Raval and Škoda Epiq.

Specifications and price

Like other electric cars built on this platform, the ID. Polo can be ordered with a 37 or 52 kilowatt-hour battery. The electric motor produces between 116 and 226 hp and drives the front axle. The tested car was the ID. Polo Style with 211 hp and the larger battery. With optional extras, its price is 39,000 euros.

Interior and driving impressions

The cabin makes extensive use of fabric, which makes it feel cosier. The instrument display animation recalls the first VW Polo with its analogue gauges, and a dedicated button labelled “RETRO” activates a 1970s-style display.

The testers say the car grew on them during the drive. The steering wheel, flattened at the top and bottom, matches the steering ratio well, giving the feel of driving a comfortable kart. The wheels are 17 rather than 19 inches, which the reviewers consider a sensible choice.

Range and sales

In one-pedal driving, more regenerative braking, which recovers energy when slowing down, is used, so the car can go further and get closer to the promised 425 km. The version with the small battery is promised a 330 km range, which the testers plan to check once the first such cars reach Latvia. Those are promised at a price below 30,000 euros before EKKI support.

Initial sales results suggest the manufacturer has hit its target: in Germany the new electric car is sold out four months ahead.
