Norovirus confirmed as cause of illness outbreak at Salaspils kindergarten
Latvia's Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has confirmed that norovirus caused an outbreak of illness at the Jāņtārpiņš kindergarten in Salaspils, with the virus detected in 40 of 51 people tested.
The Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) has announced that laboratory testing and an epidemiological investigation confirm norovirus as the cause of an illness outbreak at the Jāņtārpiņš kindergarten in Salaspils.
So far, 51 people have been tested, including both those who fell ill and their contacts. Of these, norovirus infection was confirmed in 40 cases, representing 78.4% of all those examined.
Norovirus is a common cause of gastrointestinal infection that spreads easily in group settings such as preschools, since the virus is highly contagious and can be transmitted through direct contact as well as via contaminated surfaces and food.
SPKC is continuing its investigation to clarify the scale and causes of the outbreak.
