From Car Repairs to the Classroom: Teacher Trains Future Car Mechanics in Aizkraukle

Mārtiņš Mārcēns, who spent years in the auto repair industry, now teaches future car mechanics at Aizkraukle Vocational Secondary School. He arrived at teaching unexpectedly, after being invited to join an exam board.

Technology has been part of Mārtiņš Mārcēns' life since childhood — first mopeds and motorcycles, later cars. After training in the profession, he opened his own auto repair shop, running it for about 12 years as both mechanic and business owner.

He eventually had to close the business, a decision shaped by a shortage of workers and a heavy tax burden that he says is particularly difficult for small businesses, especially in rural areas.

An unplanned path into teaching

His move into education was not a planned career step. It began when he was invited to serve on an exam board for aspiring car mechanics. That led to a request to help students prepare for the exam itself, and eventually to an offer to become a teacher.

Mārtiņš has now worked at Aizkraukle Vocational Secondary School for about two years, passing on his practical experience to a new generation training to become car mechanics.

After the school day ends, Mārtiņš likes to trade technology and classroom routine for time on the river with a boat and fishing rod, enjoying such outings together with family and friends.
