Niks Endziņš, a Latvian social media personality whom the Riga District Court sentenced to four years in prison on 16 October and who was taken into custody in the courtroom, has been admitted to hospital. His partner Sindija Bokāne confirmed on Instagram that Endziņš has been diagnosed with appendicitis and is at the Gaiļezers inpatient facility of Riga East Clinical University Hospital.
Sudden deterioration in health
According to Bokāne, the illness was unexpected, as he had not previously had stomach problems. The sudden condition has worried his relatives. Appendicitis often requires urgent surgery, but it has not been confirmed whether an operation has already been performed.
Bokāne says she has only limited information about his condition, and communication is complicated by the fact that he is in custody. She wants to find out how the treatment is going and whether she will be able to visit him.
The criminal case
On 16 October the Riga District Court sentenced Endziņš to four years of imprisonment and probation supervision for one year and six months. The case concerns the illegal acquisition and possession of narcotic substances in a large quantity, including more than 11 grams of cocaine. The ruling has not yet entered into force and can be appealed.
Bokāne has previously defended Endziņš publicly, expressing her conviction that he is innocent. Alongside the legal proceedings, his health has now become a focus for the family as well.
It is not yet known how long Endziņš will have to stay in hospital or whether his condition will affect his continued detention.
