Maja Chwalińska storms into Singapore WTA quarterfinals with 6:0, 6:1 win
Polish tennis player Maja Chwalińska routed Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova 6:0, 6:1 on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Singapore, where she will next face Belgium's Elise Mertens.
A dominant win after a tense start
Fifth-seeded Pole Maja Chwalińska (WTA No. 25) faced Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova (WTA No. 47) in the second round, after Oliynykova had beaten Vivian Wolff in her opener. The two had met once before, in December 2024 at the WTA 125 event in Florianópolis, where Chwalińska won.
The opening game of Wednesday's match went to deuce, prompting commentators to expect a long, tight contest. Instead, Chwalińska took total control from the second game onward, reeling off six straight games to close the first set 6:0 in just 26 minutes. She won 25 of 33 points played, while Oliynykova struggled badly — by the fifth game she had already made 15 unforced errors, according to Przegląd Sportowy and Sport.pl, while SportoweFakty put her total unforced-error count for the set at 17.
In the second set, Oliynykova won her only game of the entire match by breaking Chwalińska's opening service game, but the Pole responded by winning six games in a row to close out the match 6:1. The whole encounter lasted 59 minutes. Chwalińska finished with just seven unforced errors, compared with 33 for Oliynykova.

Chwalińska will play fourth-seeded Belgian Elise Mertens (WTA No. 19) in the quarterfinals on Friday, September 25. Mertens advanced to the last eight without playing after Czech player Barbora Krejčíková (WTA No. 44) withdrew before their scheduled second-round match, citing a lower-back injury. Chwalińska and Mertens have met once before — in the second round of this year's French Open, where the Pole won 6:4, 6:0 en route to the final, which she lost to Russia's Mirra Andreeva (WTA No. 5).
Krejčíková's withdrawal also scrapped a planned doubles pairing with Chwalińska; Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam and Belarus's Aliaksandra Sasnovich will take their place in the first-round doubles match against Erin Routliffe and Aldila Sutjiadi.
The Singapore Tennis Open, a WTA 500 indoor hard-court event with a total prize fund of $1.206 million, runs through Sunday, September 27. The singles champion will earn 500 WTA ranking points and a check for $185,500.
