Farm wives in Poland: when a KRUS agricultural pension is due

Poland's farmers' social insurance fund KRUS explains that a farmer's wife may qualify for her own pension at age 60 with enough qualifying years. Some farm work done without paying contributions can count.

A woman in Poland who has spent decades working on the family farm does not automatically gain the right to an agricultural pension. This follows from an explainer published by the farming outlet topagrar.pl, based on information from KRUS, the Polish Agricultural Social Insurance Fund, which runs the farmers' pension system. The question matters for women who helped their husbands run a farm for years but were not always covered by farmers' insurance.

Two basic conditions

An agricultural pension is granted to a person who meets both conditions: the woman has reached 60 years of age and has at least 25 years of periods that count towards entitlement to this pension. Having spent most of one's life working on a farm is not enough on its own. What matters is whether her insurance periods and earlier work can be counted towards the required record.

Which periods can count

For people born after 31 December 1948, KRUS lists the following earlier periods:

  • coverage under social insurance for individual farmers and their family members from 1983 to 1990;
  • running a farm or working on one after turning 16, before 1 January 1983;
  • coverage under agricultural old-age and disability insurance since 1 January 1991.

KRUS will not recognise every period of helping the family. Dates, the nature of the work and the conditions set in the regulations all matter, so each case is reviewed by the fund.

Missing documents or years

If the fund's records lack information about earlier insurance, a certificate from the relevant municipal office may help. KRUS decides which periods are counted after reviewing the documents and the rules.

If a woman has reached pension age but lacks 25 years of farm insurance, she can apply to ZUS, Poland's Social Insurance Institution, provided she has insurance periods in the general system. The amount of such a pension can be increased for periods when farmers' social insurance contributions were paid, based on a KRUS certificate. ZUS determines entitlement under the general pension rules and the person's insurance history.

A woman approaching 60 or already past it is advised to contact her local KRUS branch, bringing documents on insurance, farm work and any employment outside agriculture.
