Latvian Alpine Association to investigate deadly Denali tragedy
The Latvian Alpine Association has formed an independent commission to investigate the May tragedy on Mount Denali that killed three Latvian climbers. The commission will focus on identifying risks and drafting safety recommendations.
The board of the Latvian Alpine Association (LAS) has decided to set up an independent investigative commission to examine the accident that occurred on the Denali mountain massif in North America in late May 2026.
Three Latvian climbers — Inese Pučeka, Vija Olte, and Renārs Kunigs-Salaks — died after falling from a steep slope. They were part of a seven-person expedition led by Valdis Puriņš attempting to climb Denali, the highest peak in North America.
Expedition member Mārtiņš Bilzēns was hospitalized in Alaska in serious condition following the tragedy but has since been transported back home. The remaining three expedition members — Puriņš, Edgars Madžulis, and Guntis Svariņš — were evacuated from the mountain with the help of rescuers.
The commission's task
The newly formed commission's main goal will be to thoroughly analyze the circumstances of the incident, the expedition's preparation process, and the decisions made, in order to identify risk factors that may have contributed to the tragedy. Based on this analysis, the commission plans to draft practical recommendations for improving safety in mountaineering and preventing similar accidents in the future. LAS emphasizes that the commission's approach will be educational and systemic in nature.
To avoid conflicts of interest and ensure an objective assessment, the commission does not include members of the specific expedition, nor relatives of the victims or their representatives. All commission members have signed statements confirming the absence of conflicts of interest, as well as confidentiality commitments regarding case materials and personal data.
The commission includes LAS president Normunds Reinbergs, head of the LAS Alpinism Commission Kristaps Liepiņš, along with Pēteris Kūlis, Kaspars Klapkalns, Gita Logina, Rolands Laveiķis, and Līga Plakane.
LAS notes that during the investigation, commission members will refrain from public comments on the case to preserve the objectivity of the process. Once the work is complete, a summary report along with safety recommendations is planned to be published.
