New health and nutrition book for families launched in Kuldīga
Nutrition scientist Gita Ignace, who works at Kuldīga Hospital, has published a book teaching children and parents about diet, movement and sleep. The book was unveiled at the Kuldīga Art House.

A new book aimed at helping children and parents learn together about healthy living was officially presented this week at the Kuldīga Art House. The book, titled "A Journey of Knowledge to the Land of Health," was written by nutrition scientist Gita Ignace, who also works as a nutrition specialist at Kuldīga Hospital.
Why the book was written
Ignace says the project grew out of frustration over the lack of quality health education in Latvian schools. She points to worsening health indicators among children nationwide, including rising obesity risk, much of which she links to lifestyle habits. Unable to change the broader system, she decided to act within her own means and create an educational resource.
Lessons from her lectures
Having led hundreds of lectures and courses for both parents and children, Ignace concluded that standalone sessions alone are not effective enough. Children often learn healthy habits at kindergarten or school but return to home environments they cannot influence themselves, since it is parents who make everyday decisions. The book was therefore designed as a tool for the whole family to learn together.
A family effort
The book was a true family production: Gita wrote the text and accompanying stories, her daughter Letīcija created the illustrations, her husband Andars designed the layout, and her other daughter Debora served as an adviser.
Guests at the launch said the book would be valuable because children respond better to content created specifically for them rather than general advice aimed at parents. Several attendees noted that their biggest everyday challenges are lack of time, preparing meals the whole family enjoys, and limiting sugar consumption.
