What foldable phone cases really protect — and what they don't

Foldable phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series or the Apple iPhone Duo are costly and technically complex, and their flexible hinge design makes them more fragile than standard smartphones. That makes a protective case especially important, though manufacturers still struggle to design cases that genuinely protect these devices without hurting usability or ruining their sleek look.

What the cases cover

Most foldable phone cases come in two pieces: one covers the back and sides, including the charging port and camera module, while the other protects the front and screen with a raised edge around the perimeter. This setup guards against impacts, scratches and scuffs, but it doesn't offer full 360-degree coverage and leaves the hinge itself unprotected. Some brands, like Samsung, prioritize convenience, adding features such as a built-in kickstand, while others, like Casetify, focus on durability with drop-energy dispersal technology and dedicated hinge protection. More rugged options from brands including CaseBorne, Supcase and Otterbox add built-in screen protectors and hinge covers, though these tend to be bulkier and heavier.

What the cases can't protect against

The biggest weakness of foldable phones is dust, which can work its way inside the device and into the hinge mechanism when the phone closes. Even microscopic particles can damage or crack the screen. As a result, many foldables carry a lower dust-resistance rating than regular phones — the Galaxy Z Fold is rated only IP48, and the Motorola razr fold IP49. Newer models, including the iPhone Duo and Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold, achieve a higher IP68 rating. Currently, no case can prevent dust from getting trapped in the hinge or folded screen, so manufacturers recommend wiping the screen before closing the phone and periodically brushing dust away from the outside of the hinge with a soft brush.
