12 killed in Ukrainian drone strike on Russian oil refinery in Tatarstan

Russian authorities reported that a Ukrainian drone attack on the city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan region killed 12 people and injured 39 others. The city lies roughly 1,000 kilometers inside Russian territory and is home to a major oil refinery that Ukraine's military has repeatedly targeted, having previously struck the same facility in June.

Russian officials said air defences shot down 456 Ukrainian drones overall, though they did not specify how many drones actually reached their intended targets. News agencies described the strike as one of the deadliest attacks carried out by Kyiv since the start of the full-scale war in 2022.

Zelenskyy links strikes to pressure on Moscow

In his nightly address on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the continuing strikes on Russian oil refining facilities were directly tied to increasing pressure on Moscow. He stated that the only reason such attacks persist is Russia's unwillingness to bring the war to an end.

Deadly Russian strike on Kharkiv region

Separately, the prosecutor's office in Ukraine's Kharkiv region said Russian forces carried out a heavy artillery strike on the residential area of the village of Bugaivka in the Chuguiv district on 10 August. The attack destroyed several houses and killed five people, according to a statement posted on Telegram and cited by AFP.
