England's second-tier Championship has entered a near three-week international break after completing the opening eight-game block of its 46-match marathon season, and the early numbers point to an unusually open title race.

Just seven points separate the top 15 clubs, with Wolves and Portsmouth still to play a postponed fixture. 277 goals have already been scored, 36 more than at the same stage last year and the second-highest total at this point since the 2004-05 rebrand. Analysts point to a shift toward more direct, flank-based play — 47 goals have come from crosses, 44 of them headers, well above recent seasons' averages.

Burnley's rough start

Burnley, chasing an unprecedented sixth promotion-relegation cycle, sit bottom of the table with just four points and no wins from eight games. No club in Championship history has ever won promotion after failing to win any of its opening eight matches.

Surprises and front-runners

West Ham, back in the second tier after 14 years, have scored 22 goals in eight games — their best tally in 93 years, a mark historically linked with eventual title wins. Southampton striker Cyle Larin leads the scoring charts with seven goals in eight appearances. Other surprises include QPR's strong defensive form and newly promoted Lincoln, who boast one of the division's best defensive records despite being widely tipped for relegation.
