Submissions open for Latgalian prose contest «Latgolys prozys skaitejumi 2026»

The Latgalian cultural movement «Volūda» has announced the contest «Latgolys prozys skaitejumi 2026» («Latgale Prose Readings 2026»), now held for the seventh consecutive year. The contest aims to support the literary process in Latgale and encourage the creation of new prose works written in the Latgalian language.

Organizers are inviting prose authors who belong to the Latgale cultural community to take part. Submissions will be accepted until November 1 of this year — the only deadline made public so far.

Significance of the contest

The fact that «Latgolys prozys skaitejumi» is being held for the seventh time points to sustained interest among Latgale's authors and underlines the contest's role in the region's literary life. The name of the contest itself is written in Latgalian, emphasizing that the submitted works are expected to be written in that same language.

The «Volūda» movement has run this initiative for several years running, giving prose writers from the Latgale region a platform to present their work and helping to strengthen the tradition of Latgalian-language writing. An annual contest of this kind helps preserve and develop a regional literary language at a time when it often faces challenges within a broader linguistic environment.

Organizers have not publicly released further details about the contest's rules, judging panel, or any awards, and are asking interested authors to follow upcoming announcements and submit their work by the stated deadline.
