Latvian author Ruta Svaža publishes "Soviet Child" — an adult book told through a child's eyes
Children's author Ruta Svaža has released a new book for adults, "Padomju bērns" (Soviet Child), narrated from a child's perspective.

Latvian writer Ruta Svaža has recently published a new book titled "Padomju bērns" ("Soviet Child"), marking a notable shift in her literary career. Until now, Svaža has been known primarily as an author of children's literature, recognized for warm, imaginative stories and fairy tales.
In her earlier work, Svaža placed strong emphasis on family values, Latvian identity, and a playful, imaginative world aimed at young readers. These qualities made her books popular and recognizable among children and their parents.
"Padomju bērns," however, is written for an adult audience — the first of her books aimed specifically at this readership. Despite the change in target audience, the narrative approach still echoes her earlier style: the story is told from a child's point of view.
This method allows the author to combine both strands of her writing — presenting more serious, adult-oriented subject matter through the direct, unfiltered perspective of a child. The book has been reviewed in an LSM Culture feature examining the new title in the context of Svaža's previous literary output.
"Padomju bērns" demonstrates that the author is able to expand her literary range while retaining the distinctive voice that made her known in children's literature.
