Win in Georgia marks historic milestone for Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland claimed a 1-0 victory over Georgia in Tbilisi on Friday night, a result manager Michael O'Neill and his players described as a significant step forward. The win at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena delivered several firsts for the team: their maiden away victory in the Nations League at any level, and their first clean sheet away from home in almost two years.

The starting eleven had an average age of just 23, and prior to this match the side had won only two of their previous 12 competitive away games since O'Neill returned to the role in December 2022 — both against San Marino and Luxembourg. That made Friday's result the biggest away achievement for many of the players involved.

O'Neill said winning away from home in international football is never easy, and praised the contributions of both his starting players and substitutes. Defender Trai Hume, who captained the side in Tbilisi, acknowledged that away form had been a weak point for the young group and one they needed to address.

Goalkeeper Pierce Charles played a key role in preserving the result, saving a second-half penalty among other stops. Hume noted that the team did not simply try to hold on for a point in the closing stages but continued pushing for the win.

Northern Ireland finished third in their World Cup qualifying group last campaign before losing to Italy in the play-offs. A strong finish in this Nations League group could improve their seeding for the Euro 2028 qualifying draw, to be held in Belfast in December. The team's next fixture is at home against Hungary in Belfast on Monday.
