Wall Street stocks mostly rise as European markets slip

Following the release of the latest US inflation data, US stock prices mostly rose on Wednesday, while European stock markets largely declined.

US stock markets mostly posted gains on Wednesday, following the release of fresh US inflation figures. The data appeared to boost investor sentiment on Wall Street, with most stocks closing the day higher.

European markets, however, moved in the opposite direction, with share prices predominantly falling over the course of the trading session. The diverging reactions on either side of the Atlantic suggest investors are currently reading the economic outlook differently in the US and in Europe.

The release of new US inflation figures is traditionally seen as a significant event for financial markets, since it shapes expectations about the future course of US Federal Reserve monetary policy. This, in turn, tends to be reflected in stock market movements not only in the United States but elsewhere in the world as well.
