The Vilnius city council has announced that the city's first River Festival will take place on July 25, stretching along the banks of the Neris River from Vingis Park bridge to Žirmūnai bridge. The event coincides with the feast day of St. Christopher, the patron saint of Vilnius, and will offer a full day of activities including music, sports, outdoor cinema, creative workshops, author meet-and-greets, book club gatherings, family activities and community events.

Active pursuits will be a highlight, featuring sports sessions, night-time kayaking on the Neris and a silent disco. The evening will close with a concert near the White Bridge. The headline attraction is billed as the first event of its kind in the Baltic states: Red Bull Tandemynės, a team cycling competition staged on the water, where participants are judged on speed and ingenuity, with promises of improvised contraptions, comedy and dramatic plunges into the river.

Vilnius mayor Valdas Benkunskas said the festival is an opportunity to reconnect the city with one of its defining natural features. "St. Christopher's Day is a good moment to turn back towards the Neris, which connects Vilnius not just geographically but through daily life, memories and the rhythm of the city," he said. "We want people to come to the river with intention, to spend time there, meet others, rest or be active." The Neris has historically been central to the city's development, with entire districts growing up along its banks. Full program details are to be announced shortly.
