Several new programmes stand out in Britain's television schedule on 20 October, including a documentary on the effects of ketamine use, a popular baking contest and a look back at deleted scenes from a classic sitcom.

Documentaries

At 9pm, BBC Three shows "Stacey Dooley: Down the K-Hole". Journalist Stacey Dooley says she has never taken ketamine herself, but it is one of the most popular recreational drugs among people under 24. She meets long-term users living with the consequences, such as "ket bladder", where blood or pieces of an eroding bladder are passed in the urine. Users also describe how the drug helps them to "dissociate".

Also at 9pm, Sky Arts airs a biographical programme on novelist John le Carré, examining how his books reflect the worldview and personal life of the real David Cornwell. At 9.30pm on BBC Two, "Saving Lives at Sea" tells how 14-year-old Oscar McCrae saved Australian surfer Gavin Bowden from drowning last year, and covers an RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) rescue of two paddleboarders swept more than a mile out to sea.

BBC Four shows Myrid Carten's Bafta-nominated debut feature "A Want in Her" (2024) at 10pm. In it, the director searches for her mother Nuala, who struggles with addiction.

Entertainment and drama

At 8pm on Channel 4, "The Great British Bake Off" continues with dessert week: in round one the bakers attempt a signature challenge with staggered starts, and Nigella Lawson sets the technical bake.

On U&Gold at 9pm, David Jason and other cast members of "Only Fools and Horses" watch never-before-seen cut clips. On BBC One at 9pm, a flashback episode of "Blue Lights" brings back the character Gerry, played by Richard Dormer.

Sport

Sky Sports shows a cricket one-day international between Pakistan and England at 8.30am. BBC Two broadcasts the men's team final of the Gymnastics World Championships at 7pm, with Jake Jarman in the Great Britain squad.
