Venezuela continues to assess the aftermath of the strong earthquakes that occurred at the end of June. Following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes, the number of confirmed victims has reached around 1,700, while thousands of people remain unaccounted for.

Researchers Corey Scher and Jamon Van Den Hoek from the University of Oregon conducted a preliminary damage assessment using data from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 satellite. Their analysis indicates that approximately 58,870 buildings were damaged or destroyed across the affected region. However, the researchers caution that this is a provisional and indicative estimate that has not been verified on the ground.

Meanwhile, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez reported on Monday that 855 buildings had been damaged, of which 189 had completely collapsed.

NASA has stated that its satellites are providing critical support by capturing images and data to help teams on the ground assess the situation and coordinate response efforts.
