Your old GPU could be worth surprisingly good money right now

A memory shortage nicknamed "RAMaggedon" has made new GPUs hard to find in 2026, as AI development drives prices upward. That same shortage, however, has created a favorable moment for anyone with a spare graphics card sitting around — even a badly worn or non-functioning GPU can still fetch a decent sum, including being sold for parts.

What used cards are worth

NVIDIA's RTX 50-series prices have already climbed as much as 39 percent, with another jump of up to 30 percent possibly still ahead. AMD has raised prices by around 10 percent as well. The demand isn't limited to large AI companies — individuals and startups building their own local AI setups are also driving it, since VRAM is what these systems use to temporarily hold data while running or training models. Most personal users look for 12 to 16 GB of VRAM, while larger teams seek out cards with as much as 48 GB. That makes high-VRAM cards the most valuable to sell, including older models like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, which often has more VRAM than newer cards. A used card in good condition with ample VRAM can retain 40 to 60 percent of its original value.

Where to sell

Peer-to-peer marketplaces like eBay or Facebook Marketplace offer the biggest payout but require the most work, including creating listings, taking photos, and arranging shipping. Recent sales data shows models such as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti and EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 sometimes selling above their original list price. A more convenient but less lucrative route is trading in through programs like Newegg's GPU trade-in service or a local PC repair shop, which typically handle shipping and make a quick offer. Sellers with cards in good shape are advised to take the extra effort of selling directly, while those with worn, low-VRAM models may prefer a quick trade-in.
