Car ends up in ditch in Variņi parish, rescuers pull driver out
On the night of 12 August, a car went off the road and landed on its side in a ditch in Smiltene municipality's Variņi parish; firefighters freed the person inside and handed them to paramedics.

An accident involving a single car occurred yesterday evening in Variņi parish, Smiltene municipality. The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received the call at 22.33.
Arriving at the scene, rescuers found the car lying on its side in a ditch with a person still inside. Firefighter-rescuers freed the person and handed them over to paramedics from the Emergency Medical Service. Work at the scene concluded at 00.25, just after midnight.
Other incidents over the same 24 hours
During the same period, from 6.30 on 11 August to 6.30 on 12 August, VUGD's Vidzeme regional department received five calls in total – one for a fire, one for a rescue operation, and three that turned out to be false alarms.
In Drabeši parish, Cēsis municipality, a tree trunk of about one square metre was on fire yesterday evening; the call came at 22.17 and firefighters finished work just 27 minutes later, at 22.44.
Across Latvia during that same 24-hour period, VUGD received 54 calls overall – seven for fires, 35 for rescue operations, and 12 false alarms.
