Tartu Folk festival to take place November 12–15

The 11th international folklore festival Tartu Folk will run in Tartu from November 12–15, gathering folklore communities from Tartu county and across Europe to make music, dance and share traditions together.

This year's most distant guests travel from the Faroe Islands, some 1,900 kilometres away — the youth association Ung í Dansi, which works to keep old circle dances alive accompanied by fairy-tale-like ballads. Lithuania is represented by the youth group Dolija from Vilnius Žvėrynas Gymnasium, a returning participant known for its strong grasp of musical and dance tradition. Latvia's delegation is Skandinieki, one of the country's oldest folklore communities, led by musician Julgī Stalte, who has Livonian roots. The festival will also showcase the culture of Estonia's islands, featuring the Muhu folklore group Uijee, named folklore group of the year, alongside host club Maatasa, which performs traditional South Estonian songs, dances and tunes.

Schedule

The festival opens Thursday evening, November 12, with folk songs on the bank of the Emajõgi River. On Friday, community parties take place across Tartu and Tartu county featuring guest and local groups. Saturday, November 14, is the main day, held at the Vanemuine Concert Hall, with a gala concert where guest groups present authentic regional traditions while folk-dance ensembles show how that heritage has inspired contemporary choreography. An international dance club follows the gala, teaching traditional dances from the Faroe Islands, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, before the evening closes with an ethno-disco. The festival concludes Sunday, November 15, with a final concert near the Estonian National Museum's bridge, themed around mythological beings and the stories of different peoples connected to them.
