The three-day international exercise ‘Puhas Meri 2026’ (Clean Sea 2026) aimed at eliminating marine pollution ended in Estonia on June 11. During the exercise, the Estonian Navy, together with allies and domestic partners, practiced responding to a large-scale pollution incident.

According to the scenario, the Estonian icebreaker Tarmo ran aground in Kopli Bay and issued a distress signal. Subsequently, designated pollution response forces assessed the situation and began cleanup operations in the bay.

A total of 11 ships participated at various stages, including vessels from the Estonian and Finnish navies, the Finnish Border Guard, the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board, and private companies Vaggen and Alfons Håkans. Aerial surveillance was carried out by aircraft from the Estonian Air Force and the Finnish Border Guard. Shore infrastructure of the company Green Marine was used to pump out contaminated water.

The ‘Clean Sea’ exercise has been held in Estonia annually since 2001.
