Estonia's Chancellor of Justice, Ülle Madise, announced on the morning of 17 August via a post on her social media page that she intends to run for the office of President of the Republic of Estonia.

In her statement, Madise said she approaches the role with deep respect and awareness of the responsibility involved, describing the presidency as the greatest duty she could take on toward the Estonian state and people. She said independence allows Estonia to become the best place to live, raise children, invent, create and do business, while preserving its language, culture and values.

Constitutional duty

Madise said the president's constitutional task is to safeguard what makes Estonia Estonia — its people, language, culture, nature, freedom and peace. She said everything possible must be done so that children are born, grow into well-educated people, find work they love, receive fair pay, and build their lives and families in Estonia.

She recalled that 35 years ago freedom was won back by people who dared to do more, and expressed hope that the younger generation, given faith, education and wellbeing, would likewise grow into a strong generation.

Greater weight in the world

Madise said Estonia should carry more weight internationally, and that the president should consistently work to open doors and build bridges abroad, adding that she is not afraid of the challenges this involves.

She noted that who is suited for the presidency under current circumstances will be determined through a secret vote in the Riigikogu or the Electoral College. Madise said she is ready for open dialogue and will meet with Riigikogu members in the coming days to present her views on the president's role and answer questions. She said that if elected, she would take on the task of serving the Estonian people and state with honor.
