An explosion at an army barracks in the Bolivian city of Viacha on Friday killed at least two people and injured 59, with seven more still missing.
A powerful explosion struck an army barracks in the western Bolivian city of Viacha on Friday. Police reported that at least two people died in the incident, while the number of injured reached 59. Seven more people remained unaccounted for following the blast.
Defense Minister Ernesto Justiniano initially stated that at least 58 people had been injured, most of them civilians. He later clarified that the explosion occurred in a section of the barracks used to store pyrotechnics, injuring 52 civilians and six military personnel.
Death toll yet to be confirmed
The minister also referred to preliminary reports of possible additional fatalities but stressed that an exact figure could not yet be confirmed. Videos circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising above the barracks, which are located in the center of Viacha.
According to the minister, rescue workers are currently assisting the injured and supporting their relatives at the scene. An official investigation into the cause of the explosion has been launched, with no results announced so far.
