Nepal rescuers pull more survivors from tunnel and rubble 10 days after floods
A man has been rescued from a tunnel at a hydropower station in Nepal, bringing the total number of survivors from the site to three, while a woman was pulled from the rubble in Nuwakot. At least 1,300 people have died and more than 5,000 remain missing after the August 26 floods.
Rescue teams in Nepal have found more survivors ten days after devastating floods struck the country. According to CBS News, citing a social media post from the prime minister's office, a man was pulled alive from a tunnel at the Trishuli hydropower complex. With this latest rescue, three workers have now been saved from the site. Earlier on Friday, two Nepali workers had been brought out of a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower station.
Nepal's army said the operation was carried out by a joint team of Nepali military personnel and South Korean disaster experts. The rescued man was taken for medical checks. A photo published by China's state broadcaster CCTV shows two rescuers carrying the man out of the tunnel.
Separately, in the flood-hit town of Nuwakot, a woman was found alive under the rubble of a house. A Nepali army spokesperson announced the rescue on Saturday, saying she was being flown by helicopter to Kathmandu.
Authorities report that at least 1,300 people died in the floods on August 26, which are believed to have been caused by a glacial collapse. More than 5,000 people remain unaccounted for. In addition, around 900 workers are listed as missing from 12 hydropower projects in Nepal, and roughly 500 are thought to be trapped in various tunnels.
