Spotify on Thursday launched technology.spotify.com, a new website that makes its internal technology available to outside organizations. The move is part of an effort to formalize the company's enterprise and developer tools business.

Not a new direction

Spotify has offered tools to the wider tech community for several years. In 2020 it open sourced Backstage, a platform and framework for building customizable developer portals. It has sold its software experimentation platform Confidence since 2023 and its software development platform Portal since 2024. Earlier this year it began selling Xirp, a tool for managing AI coding agents.

Many technology firms build internal systems to make their developers more efficient, but it is fairly unusual for a company like Spotify to sell such tools to other businesses.

Answering the questions

Tyson Singer, Spotify's SVP of Technology & Platform, acknowledged that the strategy raises questions. In a post on the company's engineering site, he noted that behind the consumer app are hundreds of cross-functional squads shipping products and code every day.

The new site will host solutions built to serve Spotify's own 777 million monthly active users, covering both open source and paid services. Singer argued that while AI has made building software faster, it is not necessarily simpler, as complexity, cost and operational surface area grow too. Spotify is betting that development teams will still need certain core services, which it says will be ready for use with AI agents.

Revenue unclear

It remains unclear how much revenue the enterprise sales generate, since Spotify does not disclose those figures in its financial reporting. That could change if the company pushes harder into the enterprise market and turns a former side business into a more formal operation.

The site lists no pricing. Instead, interested companies can fill out a form to contact sales and discuss their needs.
