A prison sentence handed down in a criminal case over a tragic home birth in Jelgava, in which both the mother and the child died, has now taken legal effect.

According to news agency LETA, the Supreme Court has decided not to open cassation proceedings in the case. As a result, the ruling of the Zemgale Regional Court, which upheld the sentence imposed by the court of first instance, remains in force.

With the Supreme Court's refusal to initiate cassation review, the case has been concluded on its merits, and the imposed prison sentence is now final and enforceable.
