On October 8, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE Latvia) opens a new season of its international Young Reporters for the Environment programme. This year's suggested theme, "Small Worlds, Big Future: Reporting from a Pollinator-Friendly 2030," invites participants to imagine a world where people and nature live in balance, with special attention to pollinators as small but vital living creatures for our future. The theme is a recommendation rather than a restriction, and participants may still choose to report on other environmental issues most relevant to their own communities.

Daniels Trukšāns, who leads the programme in Latvia, says it gives young people a chance to look at their surroundings with fresh eyes, notice local environmental problems, search for solutions, and spark change through storytelling. He encourages participation not only from those already interested in journalism or environmental protection, but from any young person wanting to pay closer attention to the world around them.

Categories and participants

Entries can be submitted individually or in teams across five categories: article, photography, video, podcast, and the new "Open Format" category, which allows participants to explore environmental stories through art, games, comics or other creative forms. A national jury will evaluate submissions, with the best entries advancing to the international competition. The programme is open to young people aged 11 to 25, as well as teachers and youth mentors. Registration runs until October 13 at jvr.lv.

The most active participants this season can gain additional opportunities, including free participation in the Eco-Schools Winter Forum, paid participation in missions in Latvia and Portugal, and internship or work experience opportunities in media and environmental organisations.

The Young Reporters for the Environment programme operates in 41 countries and is coordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education. In Latvia it is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE Latvia), supported by the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund.
