Saeima bans local government councillors from travelling to Russia and Belarus
The Saeima has adopted in the final reading an amendment barring local government councillors from travelling to Russia and Belarus. The ban also covers transit through the territory of those countries.

On Thursday, 8 October, the Saeima backed in the final reading an amendment to the law on restricting measures that threaten national security. It introduces a ban on travel to Russia and Belarus for local government councillors.
The restriction does not apply only to trips whose final destination is one of these countries. The ban also covers crossing the territory of Russia and Belarus in transit, so councillors may not pass through them on the way to another destination either.
The legislation refers to Russia and Belarus as aggressor states. The amendments were made to the law on restricting measures that threaten national security, which regulates restrictions linked to the security of the state.
