Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs took part on Thursday and Friday in a meeting of the Arraiolos Group in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia. At the informal gathering, presidents and leaders of 12 European Union (EU) member states discussed the bloc's strategic priorities, stronger security and ways to improve competitiveness. Rinkēvičs stressed that EU competitiveness is a strategic security issue, according to his adviser Mārtiņš Drēģeris.

Technology and regulation

Rinkēvičs believes the EU should invest in technology and artificial intelligence and avoid over-regulation. He said a balance must be found between protecting citizens' rights and giving European companies room to grow and compete globally.

Security and defence

In an increasingly complex global environment, the president said, security and defence should be among the EU's main priorities. Defence capabilities, the defence industry and security institutions need to be strengthened so the EU can respond more effectively to growing security challenges, particularly from Russia.

Support for Ukraine and enlargement

Rinkēvičs noted that EU security is closely tied to Ukraine's security, so all forms of support for Ukraine must continue. This is especially important in autumn and winter, when Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine's civilian and energy infrastructure.

He confirmed support for the integration of Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkan countries into the EU, saying enlargement is also a matter of the EU's credibility. At the same time, Rinkēvičs acknowledged that admitting new members may require political reform of the EU.
