Riga's swimming spots still warm, water reaches up to 22°C in places
Data from the Riga Municipal Police show water temperatures at the city's official swimming areas remain high, exceeding 20°C in several locations.
Water at Riga's official swimming spots remains warm, according to data compiled by the Riga Municipal Police.
Warmest locations
The warmest water right now is found at Lake Bābelītis, the Bolderāja quarry and the Daugava river by Ķīpsala, all measuring +22°C. Slightly cooler is Ķīšezers lake at +21°C, while the Daugava near Lucavsala and the Rumbula site both sit at +20°C.
Other swimming areas are cooler. The water at Vakarbuļļi beach has warmed to +18°C, while Daugavgrīva and Vecāķi both measure +17°C.
Network of swimming spots and upkeep
Riga has nine official swimming spots in total — in Daugavgrīva, Vakarbuļļi, Vecāķi, Rumbula, Bābelītis, Ķīpsala, the Bolderāja quarry, as well as Lucavsala and the Lucavsala bay — all staffed with lifeguard posts. The city also has 20 additional recreational areas by the water where no lifeguards are on duty.
Throughout the swimming season, these areas receive regular upkeep, including waste collection and removal, lawn mowing, maintenance of access roads and pedestrian paths, and care of green spaces and amenities. At the official swimming spots, the top layer of sand is also regularly loosened.
