Reinis Uzulnieks, who only recently was forced to give up his post as welfare minister after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol, has secured comparatively strong voter support in the Saeima elections. This is according to preliminary results released by the Central Election Commission (CVK).

Uzulnieks ran in the elections on the list of the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS). Despite the scandal surrounding his conduct behind the wheel, which led directly to the loss of his ministerial post, a significant number of voters appear to have placed their trust in him by casting votes in his favor.

Preliminary figures

The CVK has stressed that the current figures are preliminary and may change as the final vote count proceeds. Even at this stage, however, the level of support Uzulnieks has received stands out given the recent scandal surrounding him.

The case has drawn attention to how the public and voters respond to transgressions by politicians, even serious ones such as drunk driving. While the incident cost Uzulnieks his ministerial post, the preliminary election results suggest it has not substantially diminished support for him among a portion of the electorate.

Further details on the final election results, and on whether Uzulnieks' level of support will be sufficient to secure a seat in the Saeima, will become available once the CVK issues its official confirmation.
