Bike thief in Riga tumbles moments after fleeing with stolen bicycle
Security cameras in a Riga apartment building caught a man stealing tools and a child's bicycle from a stairwell, only for him to fall off the bike shortly after making his getaway.

In Riga's Brasa neighborhood, on Indrānu Street, a man entered an apartment building's stairwell during daytime and stole belongings from several residents. The incident was captured on the building's security cameras.
Footage shows the thief first removing parts from a child's bicycle on the ground floor, including a light and a lock, before heading upstairs to look for other valuables. He later returned carrying a toolbox, and eventually decided to take the bicycle itself.
Renovation work provided cover
The theft was made easier by ongoing renovation work in the building, which meant the front door had been left open. Neither Jānis, the resident whose belongings were stolen, nor his neighbors noticed the stranger during the day — the theft only came to light hours later, when someone reviewed the camera footage and reported it in the building's shared resident chat.
Jānis believes the thief acted deliberately and with experience, possibly knowing when residents would be at work and using the renovation as a convenient cover for his presence.
A clumsy escape
While the theft itself went smoothly, the getaway did not. Shortly after leaving the building, the man fell off the stolen bicycle in a nearby car wash parking lot. The fall didn't stop him for long, though — he got up, gathered his belongings, and rode off undisturbed.
Local residents say they had previously noticed the man acting suspiciously in the area. Brasa residents are being urged to stay alert and keep their bicycles securely locked.
