A new laboratory studying the extension of human lifespan and its impact on state policy, the economy and the labour market has opened at a Moscow management school. Maria Vorontsova, the elder daughter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has a medical education, spoke at the opening, according to the Ukrainian news portal Dialog.ua. The development matters because it shows that the longevity topic is receiving state backing and the attention of senior officials in Russia.

What Vorontsova said

At the opening, Vorontsova said the main goal of this field is to "trick God and nature", that is, to go beyond the natural limits of human life. She acknowledged that no breakthrough in ageing research has yet been achieved, but hopes for progress in the coming decades.

"I think that over the next 10–20 years we will certainly develop this new component of the healthcare system. It will allow us to make further progress in this area," Vorontsova said.

The portal says she is one of the key figures in Russia's longevity programme. The programme aims to help people live longer. It is generously funded from the state budget, yet no significant scientific achievements have been made public.

State plans

Russian officials have previously spoken about work on an anti-ageing vaccine. Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova promised that its production could begin in 2028–2030, though it is unclear whether the plans will be realised.

In 2025, on Putin's initiative, Russia launched the national project "Long and Active Life", with funding of two trillion roubles. The goal is to raise average life expectancy in the country from about 74 to 81 years by 2036.

Putin's interest

Putin turned 74 this month. According to Dialog.ua, he actively tries to maintain a youthful appearance, and there has long been talk of his interest in longevity. In 2025, in Beijing, media recorded a conversation between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in which the possibility of extending human life to 150 years through organ transplant technology was discussed.
