Latvian police have completed an investigation into an adult allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old girl by exploiting her helpless state, leaving her pregnant. The case has been forwarded to prosecutors to consider pressing charges.

The Criminal Police Bureau of the State Police's Vidzeme Regional Department has completed its investigation into a sexual crime against a minor. On September 21, 2026, the case was sent to the Vidzeme District Prosecutor's Office to decide on initiating criminal prosecution.
The investigation established that an adult, allegedly exploiting the helpless state of a 12-year-old girl, engaged in sexual intercourse with her. As a result, the girl became pregnant.
Two people detained
A man born in 2003 has been named as a suspect in the case. The investigation also uncovered circumstances suggesting possible liability of another person for failing to report the crime against the minor despite being aware of it. In connection with this, police detained a woman born in 1994 on February 20, 2026.
Both suspects in the criminal proceedings are currently held in custody as the applied security measure.
The criminal case has been classified under Section 159, Part Three of the Criminal Law, which covers rape resulting in serious consequences or rape of a person under sixteen years of age. The second suspect has been charged under Section 315 of the Criminal Law — failure to report a crime.
State Police reminds the public that no person is considered guilty until proven so in accordance with the procedures established by law.
