Study: Estonia's climate is warming 1.5 times faster than the global average

A new study finds Estonia's average temperature is rising about 1.5 times faster than the global rate, with winters warming far quicker than summers. Researchers also warn of heavier rainfall extremes and growing drought risk for farmers.

A new study on climate change in Estonia shows the country's climate is responding to global warming considerably more sharply than the world average. Lead author Erko Jakobson, associate professor of atmospheric remote sensing, explains that what matters is not the exact year a given warming threshold is reached, but what happens to Estonia's climate once it is. The study drew on 31 global climate models.

Key findings

For every one degree of global average temperature rise, Estonia's annual mean temperature rises by about one and a half degrees. Winters are warming especially fast — by 1.9 degrees Celsius for every degree of global warming, compared with 1.3 degrees for summers. The number of freezing days falls by 13 percent per degree of warming. While milder winters cut heating costs, they bring new problems: long thaw-free periods will become a thing of the past, affecting winter sports enthusiasts, while farmers face a more damaging freeze-thaw cycle threatening winter crops as the insulating snow cover thins.

The researchers also project rising precipitation — an average increase of about 31 millimeters, or 4.6 percent, per degree of global warming, occurring mainly in winter and autumn. Summer projections are more complex: models suggest a dividing line runs through the Baltic region, with conditions becoming drier to the south of Estonia and wetter to the north. Summers are expected to bring short, intense downpours that wash soil off fields without easing drought stress in plants, since the water runs off before it can soak into the ground.

Uncertainties and the bigger picture

Jakobson stresses that forecasts for wind speed and storminess remain highly uncertain, since Estonia's weather is shaped by both Atlantic cyclones and high-pressure systems from the east. Some models show winds strengthening, others weakening, so no confident claim can be made about future storminess.

The scientist also notes that current models do not account for abrupt tipping points, such as major melting of Antarctic ice or Siberian permafrost, meaning surprises remain possible. Jakobson said scientists' role is to measure the causes and pace of warming, while decisions on solutions and resource allocation rest with society and politicians. The study was published in the journal Boreal Environment Research.
