The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off in Mexico City with a vibrant opening ceremony at the iconic Azteca Stadium. The event featured performances by global pop star Shakira, Colombian musician J Balvin, Afrobeats star Burna Boy, Latin music artist Danny Ocean, and Fher Olvera of Maná.

The tournament's official anthem, "DNA," was performed by opera legend Andrea Bocelli and K-pop singer Ejae. Mexican singer Fernández, son of legendary crooner Vicente Fernández, led the crowd of 80,000 fans in the Mexican national anthem. Grammy-winning South African artist Tyla performed her nation's anthem.

Fans dressed in colorful outfits, many in Mexico's team colors, gathered at the stadium. Javier Pérez, who came with his family, told the BBC: "We were lucky to get hospitality tickets and it's a unique experience. I have never been to a World Cup before so to bring my family is wonderful. I just want Mexico to get off on the right foot, win today and score a load of goals!"

The build-up to the tournament had been complicated, involving renovations of the airport and stadium, protests, and cartel violence just months ago. However, on Thursday those issues were set aside as football took center stage.

Mexico is co-hosting the World Cup with the United States and Canada, which will hold their own opening ceremonies on Friday. Tyla is also scheduled to perform at the US ceremony in Los Angeles alongside Katy Perry, Future, Lisa, and Anitta.

FIFA has engaged a wide range of global artists for the ceremonies, many of whom appear on the official 18-song World Cup album.
