England defender Trevoh Chalobah has ended his near 20-year association with Chelsea, completing a £31m move this summer to Italian Serie A side Como 1907, where he will play under manager Cesc Fabregas.

The 27-year-old's career has been marked by resilience through repeated setbacks. As a boy training at Chelsea's Cobham academy alongside players such as Mason Mount and Declan Rice, he sometimes doubted whether he was good enough. In 2024, under then-manager Enzo Maresca, he was excluded from first-team training as part of the so-called "bomb squad" and sent out on loan.

Each time, Chalobah managed to fight his way back into the Chelsea squad. Recalled from a loan spell at Crystal Palace in January 2025, he went on to make 151 appearances for the club overall, including a personal-best 47 appearances in his final season.

Chalobah said he always believed he could succeed at Chelsea regardless of circumstances, including the chaotic overhaul that followed the club's 2022 change of ownership, when almost the entire squad was replaced. He expressed gratitude for what he learned at the club and said he would continue supporting Chelsea going forward.

This is not his first experience abroad — during the 2020-21 season he spent time on loan at French top-flight club Lorient, where he was spotted by Thomas Tuchel, then managing Paris St-Germain. Tuchel later gave Chalobah his Chelsea debut and, years later as England manager, called him up to the World Cup squad following an injury to Tino Livramento.

England lost in the World Cup semi-final to Argentina but secured bronze with a 6-4 win over France in the third-place match.

Chalobah's move to Como was driven largely by Fabregas, whom he has known since his academy days when the former Chelsea midfielder trained alongside younger players. Under Fabregas, Como has risen rapidly from Serie B to Champions League football within two seasons.
