Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius announced that the Netherlands will unveil defense agreements and plans worth over €3 billion at the NATO forum in Ankara. The information was reported by Reuters.
Among the announcements are partnership agreements with Belgium on air defense and with the UK on warships. The Netherlands also plans to expand cooperation with Germany on joint projects. The minister emphasized that these are not just promises but concrete plans totaling "significantly more than €3 billion."
Confidence in US role in NATO
When asked whether she is confident the US will remain in NATO despite Donald Trump's hints about possibly leaving the alliance, Yesilgöz-Zegerius replied that she must be confident because "we need each other" for their own security. She added that it benefits Europe to invest more in its own defense and defense industry regardless of who is in the White House.
New financing mechanism
It also became known that the UK, Netherlands, Finland, and Poland will establish a new Multilateral Defense Mechanism (MDM) aimed at strengthening defense capabilities and improving the efficiency of allied spending.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that alliance members have reached the 4% GDP annual defense spending target.
