Newegg's GPU trade-in program may cost you more than it saves

Newegg's GPU Trade-In program lets customers exchange old hardware for a new purchase by selecting an eligible replacement, listing their current components, and completing checkout. The retailer then provides a prepaid UPS shipping label, and once the returned item passes inspection, the agreed trade-in credit is refunded to the customer's original payment method.

However, a comparison with recent eBay sales suggests Newegg's offers can fall well short of open-market prices. An 8GB RTX 2060 Super, for instance, is valued at just $60 in Newegg's program, while a working Zotac RTX 2060 Super sold on eBay for $161.99 in July. An Asus Prime RTX 5070 fetched $565 on eBay in June, compared to Newegg's $400 trade-in offer, and an RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition sold for $500 on eBay versus Newegg's $380 valuation.

What convenience actually costs

The program's main appeal lies in ease of use. Newegg covers shipping with a prepaid UPS label, allows 14 days to send in the old component, and returns rejected items without charging for return shipping. Inspections are thorough, covering the model and serial number, physical damage, rust or corrosion, fan and port function, operating temperature, noise levels and benchmark performance. Once an item ships to Newegg, the trade-in cannot be canceled. Inspection takes 10 to 15 business days, followed by another three to five days for the credit to post.

A key limitation is that trade-ins cannot be exchanged for cash on their own — they must accompany an eligible purchase, such as another component or a qualifying gaming PC, and the replacement item must cost more than the trade-in value. Traded-in graphics cards and other electronics can also end up in Newegg Refreshed, the company's refurbished-electronics resale program.
