Indie game roundup: a grief-stricken road trip, The Traitors on mobile and new demos

Gaming and technology site Engadget has published its regular roundup of independent (indie) video game news, covering this week's showcases, newly released titles and upcoming projects.

Showcases and announcements

The Triple-i Initiative showcase revealed that Among Us Story: On Guard, a detective spinoff, will arrive on February 17. It also featured Gods With Badges, a new game from studio Strange Scaffold, and Lazare's Sacrifice, a narrative deckbuilder due next year. The reviewer singled out the demo of Militsioner, in which the player tries to escape a town while a giant policeman keeps watch. The full game is set for next year.

The Out of Bounds showcase presented 16 games, including Bingone, Draftula and Haunted Cleaner. During the Convergence showcase, a new release date for Kick was announced: November 3. LudoNarraCon is also under way, spotlighting 50 narrative-driven games; an accompanying sale with discounts on more than 150 games runs until October 15.

New releases

Forever Ago (developer Third Shift, publisher Annapurna Interactive) is a road trip adventure about an older man who follows a scavenger hunt set up by his late wife, visiting places that shaped their relationship. It deals with grief and the passage of time. The reviewer notes clumsy storytelling and some clunky controls, but praises its slow pace and sincerity. It usually costs $20.

The Traitors: Interactive Game, based on the TV show, is free on iOS and Android with in-app purchases. Shil, a puzzle platformer, is out on Meta Quest for $15, while Echo Weaver (publisher Akupara Games) is a Metroidvania-style game where progress is gated by knowledge rather than unlockable abilities.

Coming soon

Warhammer Survivors arrives on November 10 and Apple Crumble on December 3. A demo is already available for Haunted Paws, a co-op game in which two pups try to rescue their owner from a haunted mansion.
