NATO allies take Trump's bluster in stride at crunch summit
US President Donald Trump publicly berated NATO allies during the summit, but private interactions told a different story. Allies have developed a plan to keep the summit on track, involving funds, rearmament, and a gesture on Iran.

During the NATO summit, US President Donald Trump publicly lashed out at alliance members, but behind closed doors the situation was quite different. Trump began his visit in Ankara by criticizing NATO, but his stance shifted before he departed.
Trump also reignited the feud over Greenland, calling for its annexation, which pushed European leaders to unite in support of Denmark. This dispute once again highlighted tensions between the US and Europe.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte is pushing a "Made in NATO" weapons initiative, which clashes with the EU's "Buy European" drive. This competition could hamper the alliance's ability to rearm quickly.
Alliance members have crafted a plan to keep the summit on track, which includes financial commitments, rearmament, and a possible gesture regarding Iran to appease the US president.
