NATO fighter jets shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle that had entered Latvian airspace, which the Latvian military said resulted from Russian electromagnetic warfare, part of a wider pattern of drone incidents in the region.

NATO fighter jets have shot down a drone that entered Latvian airspace, according to Latvia's military. Officials said the unmanned aerial vehicle crossed into Latvian territory "as a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare," pointing to possible interference from Russian electronic-warfare equipment near the border.

The incident comes as several countries in the region report similar drone-related episodes. Moldova's president recently condemned Russia after a "killer drone" crash in the country, with Chișinău recalling its ambassador from Moscow following multiple such incidents in recent weeks.

Wider context

The episode follows the European Union's decision to expand its sanctions list against Russia, adding five more individuals after some of the deadliest recent attacks on Ukraine. The EU acted after one of the most destructive barrages on Kyiv in recent memory, which killed 17 people.

Separately, Russia has announced it is postponing its major military event on Red Square until 2027, with organizers citing "circumstances beyond their control" — a move reported amid ongoing drone attacks inside Russia.

The Latvian incident underscores how side effects of Russia's war in Ukraine — including electromagnetic interference and stray drones — are increasingly spilling into NATO member states' territory and airspace, adding to regional security tensions.
