Qatar is mourning the loss of its Father Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who died at the age of 74. During his 18-year rule, he oversaw a dramatic transformation of the country, turning it into a global powerhouse in energy, diplomacy and media.

Under his leadership, Qatar expanded its liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, which became the backbone of the economy. He founded the Al Jazeera media network, which gained worldwide influence. Qatar also rose prominently on the international stage.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily stepped down, handing power to his son, the current Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. His legacy continues to shape Qatar's policies and development.
