Mexico's national football team kicked off their World Cup campaign with a dominant 2-0 victory over South Africa on Saturday. Early in the match, Raúl Jiménez tested South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who made a save. In the ninth minute, a defensive error by South Africa allowed Julián Quiñones to score the opener. Quiñones later hit the post, while Williams kept South Africa in the game with another save.
Early in the second half, South Africa were reduced to ten men after Jay Sithole received a red card for a last-man foul on Bryan Gutierrez. Mexico failed to convert the resulting free kick, but in the 67th minute, Jiménez headed in a cross from Roberto Alvarado to make it 2-0. Six minutes before the end, Thamba Zwane was sent off for a head-high challenge, leaving South Africa with nine men. In second-half stoppage time, Mexico captain César Montes was also dismissed.
